An Story of Surprising Kindness: When a University Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dorm Ground
Back in the year 2006, I made a trip to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was to book a place to stay after getting there, but upon reaching the city, a large conference was in town and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.
As a visitor from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of spend the night at the airport – but quickly found the local airport, not like the one back home, does not operate all night. With no idea quite what to do and growing worried, I boarded a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, believing I could pass the night in an establishment that was open all night. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the following day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
Apparently, I appeared out of place as a female student saw me wandering around downtown and inquired if everything was alright. I explained my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on a spare mattress at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, given that my my interview would take place the next morning. She even offered a meal: a leftover filled rolls she had from her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a protected spot and secure to spend the night.
In retrospect, I can appreciate the enormous leap of faith she accepted as a young woman inviting a male stranger she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and did not consider to such safety concerns. As a dad now, I’m amazed she offered that help – yet incredibly thankful.
Ultimately, I did not attending ANU, and I lost touch with the student afterwards, yet her memory has stayed with me her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her generosity abundantly. Our society requires more folks who show such kindness.
