Democrats Condemn Trump After He Suggests They Should Face Capital Punishment
Lawmakers from the Democratic party expressed fury after former President Donald Trump charged a coalition of Democratic legislators of being "betrayers" and stated they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The Message That Triggered the Controversy
The video footage, released on Tuesday, features six Democratic lawmakers who previously acted in defense or intelligence positions.
"Similar to us, you all took an vow to defend and uphold this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "Currently, the risks to our governing document don't only come from abroad, but from domestically. Our statutes are explicit, you can decline illegal orders, you can decline unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute directives that break the legal system or our national charter."
Donald Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement appeared to provoke a furious reaction from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump published on his preferred platform: "This constitutes SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he declared: "This is really bad, and Harmful to our Country. Their statements cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that read: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Party Leaders React
Following Trump's remarks on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a combined declaration denouncing the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no position in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all served our United States with exceptional national pride and honor. We strongly denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against congressional representatives, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to vigorously do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must without delay delete these radical digital publications and recant his dangerous rhetoric before he gets someone killed," the statement continued.
Representatives' Strong Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who care for this United States and swore an pledge to defend and uphold the founding document of the United States," they declared. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to keep it. No warning, coercion, or promotion of aggression will deter us from that sacred obligation."
"What's most telling is that the ex-president considers it punishable by capital punishment for us to reiterate the law," they stated. "Our service members should know that we have their support as they fulfill their pledge to the national charter and duty to obey only proper directives. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They stated: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our death and political violence. This is a time for moral clarity."
Additional Political Reactions
The Opposition leader also condemned Trump's remarks and posted on social media: "It's important to understand: the President of the United States is demanding the death of elected officials."
He stated: "This is an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, all representatives, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", stating: "This represents very dangerous, you have prominent officials of Congress instructing soldiers to ignore directives, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Conservative representative also reportedly told journalists that in what he examined of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of sedition" but that "attorneys have to analyze the language and decide all that."
Administration Response
During a executive branch meeting on that day, when questioned by a media member, "Does the president want to execute elected officials?", the White House press secretary responded: "No."
"We should understand about what the president is responding to," the official stated. "We see active officials of the federal government who worked together to organize a recorded statement to personnel of the national defense, to serving soldiers advising them to ignore the commander in chief's proper directives."
She added: "The purity of our armed forces rests on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can result in fatalities, it can result in confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are basically encouraging."
