UN:Me: A Cerebral Horror Merging Survival Horror and Social Deduction Gameplay
The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed a number of intriguing future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this solo experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman containing multiple human souls inside her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Stepping Into a Fractured Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of high school age. Inside her reside four distinct personas, all possessing their own anxieties and motivations. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character navigating a abandoned chapel.
A World of Personal Horror
"What makes you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game delves into that idea — fears that are specific to every individual."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at a particular moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and attack the girl in succession. As the persona changes, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The hospital is filled with nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Flowers are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me presents a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "true" one. "All four personas claims that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is authentic."
After a player believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since every entity can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration states. "The last one standing could be a fake. In any case, your decisions are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
